Week 10…on the home run.

LAST WEEK

Well done to Liam and Julia who competed in the Speech competition at Carterton. Liam made it through to the finals  and although unplaced, performed very well. We are very proud of the efforts that both students made.

Liam in the Speech finals.

Also last week, our students presented their Inquiries. It was a big step up for the year 7’s as they entered the world of presenting their work with just cue words to ” have a conversation” with the audience about their learning. Good progress is being made. What is really great though, is the feedback and next steps that the students offer each other. They are learning to be specific and supportive. A case in particular, one of our boys who gets very anxious about presenting, was given overwhelming positive feedback from the students for a very well done Inquiry. It is a great example of the supporting one another philosophy we are trying to foster within the syndicate.

Matariki was celebrated on Friday. Stephanie  replied on our behalf as the junior Kapa Haka group called us down to the fire and we were all very proud of her. We worked with our buddy classes in the afternoon and that was a very enjoyable experience.

NEXT WEEK

Regional Cross country in Wellington is on Tuesday, good luck to all the contestants.

Students have completed their goals for the student led conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please let us know if you are unable to meet and we will try to arrange another time. A reminder that school is finishing early on Wednesday.

The firewood raffle was drawn on Wednesday. One of Connor’s relations won it. We raised $360.00. Still a long way to go to get the $1700.00 needed for the bus. Hoping that the Spelling Bee will be well supported next term.

Our visit to the Smallwood family farm on Monday has been postponed until next term. Mr Smallwood is going to come to school instead and speak to us about water management on the farm.

This will be the last post for this term. Brodie and I wish you happy and safe holidays.

Week 9…beginning to wind down.

LAST WEEK

Monday was the Speech finals and the finalists entertained us well. Congratulations to Liam  – Y8 and Julia – Y7. They go off to Carterton on Tuesday to compete against other students from the Wairarapa.

Science Fair winners were also announced on Monday. First place to Matthew, second place to Harvey and third place to Isabella. Well done everyone.

Cross country results were also very pleasing. Brodie was very happy about the effort and behaviour of our students. Chantelle, Maddy, Liam, Elliot, Lincoln and Matthew all made it through to Wellington to compete there. Good luck team and keep up the training!

Assessments are now complete and we are analysing the data. There has been good progress for most of the students and we are very pleased with the results.  This week, the students will use their assessments to determine their goals for the rest of the year.

NEXT WEEK

We were supposed to draw the firewood raffle on Friday, but were unable to as more than half of the year 8’s did not sell their tickets. I extended the date to Wednesday of this week. Please give your children a nudge to get out and sell their tickets. The more money they raise, the less money you pay. The bus is an extra $70.00 per student on top of the Camp fees.

Inquiry presentations begin on Monday and we are looking forward to see what piqued the students interest.

Matariki will be celebrated on Friday. It will begin with a brief ceremony at 7:00am at the Matariki Garden on the South field. The junior Kapa Haka have been rehearsing and I hear they are great . Kauri syndicate students are expected to be there and we hope many will be. We will spend the afternoon with our buddy classes doing a variety of activities.

The following week, we have been invited to the Smallwood Family Farm to see how they manage their water and to plant trees as our “Take Action” part of our topic work. A notice will be sent out this week.

Always lovely to see our year 8’s lending a helping hand to our year 7’s. Well done Brad.

A willing helper and a willing ear.

Week 8…lot’s on again!

LAST WEEK

Speech competition, Science Fair, it was a full on week. Brodie and I were very pleased with the effort that most students put into both events. The Speech finals are on Monday after morning tea, Mr Mackay will be judging. Mrs Wish and Mr Clausen from Kuranui College judged the Science Fair experiments and were impressed with many of the exhibits. They have given us good feedback about how students can improve in the future. Winners will be announced on Monday at our syndicate assembly, with Mr Mackay presenting their certificates. The exhibits will be available to view until 2:30 on Monday. The winners will also be coming out to lunch with us on Tuesday along with our class recipients of the monthly lunch out. This month, those students are Cameron (room 13) for working very hard to achieve well and Isabella (room 14) for always stepping in to help others when needed. We appreciate the effort the students are making, working towards being the best they can be.

NEXT WEEK

Speech finals, Cross Country and assessment week…

Assessment will be on for most of this week so that we can identify students progress and target gaps for the rest of the year. Students will be reporting back to you at the student led conference about their progress to date in the last week of this term.

Cross Country is at Kahutara is on Wednesday. Brodie has been training the students each day and we wish them good luck.

Finally, a word from Logan and Carlos about their thoughts about the Young Leaders Day trip. Click on the link.

Week 7 – Winter’s here…

LAST WEEK

We certainly knew that winter was here when we headed up to Mt Holdsworth last week, it was very cold. Students had a great experience, learnt lots of new things and saw evidence about their predictions. This was the last trip for Mr Field and he commented on how much he enjoyed both classes.

We gave the students a breather last week, in that they got to work on what they needed to mostly, and get help from us when they needed it. They said that it helped a lot.

THIS WEEK

The class Speech Competition begins on Tuesday in each class. The top six year 7 and top six year 8 students will then perform their Speech to Mr Mackay for final judging next Monday.

The Science Fair Experiments will be displayed in the hall on Thursday and judging will be done by Vicki Wish, Science dept. head at Kuranui College, on Friday morning. Please feel free to drop in to see the students work. The display will be available from 11:00 am until 2:30 pm on Friday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK

Is assessment week. We have been working on students gaps identified in February and have been encouraging students to use homework time for practicing skills and class time to get extra help. We’d appreciate it if you had that chat with your child about working towards being the best they can be.
