Week 10…where did the term go?

LAST WEEK

Inquiry presentations have been done and Brodie and I are very pleased with the quality of this first Inquiry. Students have researched well, used new and engaging presentation tools and more importantly, the year 8’s have clearly been giving advice to the year 7’s about their work and how to present effectively. It is wonderful to hear the students giving each other positive feedback and next steps to improve their work.

Constable Keely was unable to come and talk to us, so we will re-schedule that visit for next term.

The touch tournament was held on Wednesday and Brodie was very pleased with the way the students were behaved. They showed great sportsmanship and support for one another.

THIS WEEK

On Tuesday, we are very fortunate to have Mr Trevor Grice coming in to speak to the students about drug and alcohol abuse.  He founded Life Education in New Zealand in 1988. After twenty years helping addicted people, and after seeing many unnecessary deaths of New Zealand’s young people, Trevor realised that equal emphasis needed to be put into prevention through education. We thank John O’Connell for organising this.

The year 7 Outdoor Education programme will take place on Wednesday at the Waiohine Centre. The year 8’s will be with me, creating movie story boards for the traffic safety week.

DO YOU KNOW…

how our classes work? Just  a brief outline about how Kauri Syndicate classes are run and an invitation to pop in at any time to see for yourselves.
Teachers still teach and always will. All lessons begin with a teaching session where laptops are usually not used. The students then use their laptops to do the tasks set and to complete activities that consolidate their learning. Students have the choice of where they want to sit, the only rules being that they have to sit in different places to the one in the previous session ie, if they were on a sofa before a break, they need to be at a table the following session. The flexible learning environment is an important part of how we work. There is a need for us to provide students of today with options that suit their learning style.
A lot of collaborative learning is going on, so the students do move around the room a lot to accommodate the group they are working with. This learning environment makes the most of our digital tools, the engagement of students is increased, it provides the opportunity for us to work closely with the students who need it and it provides space for other students to extend their skills with the support of their peers.
We also welcome your feedback on how we provide learning for your children. We’d love it if you popped in, it’s a great experience to see.

Brodie and I wish you a Happy Easter and safe travelling. See you next term.

Week 9…cross country training begins!

Last Week

The date for cross country has been set for Tuesday 1 May at Barton’s Farm and the fitness programme will help students with this. It’s great to hear that some students are already doing some training on their own.

Last weeks mufti day raised a little over $380.00 for The Child Cancer Foundation, thank you for supporting it.

Sadly, the Outdoor Education programme had to be delayed due to bad weather. The new date is Wednesday 4 April and all students will be going at the same time. A note will be sent home next week with details and also, we will need some parent helpers. Please contact Brodie if you are able to help. bwilson@greytownschool.com

Next Week

This week is very busy with Inquiry presentations, touch rugby tournament and Fancy Feet Day. Constable Keely will be talking to both classes about drug and alcohol use and sharing her experiences of dealing with young students when under the influence and the consequences that can occur.

Coming up…

  • Monday 26 March – Trainee teacher in room 14 for five weeks.
  • Tuesday 27 March – Drug and alcohol education with Constable Keely.
  • Tuesday 27 March – Fancy Feet Day
  • Wednesday 28 March – Touch Tournament in Carterton.
  • Tuesday 3 & Wednesday 4 – Year 8 Leadership Course for our Head Girl & Boy.
  • Thursday 5 April – Last day of technology at Kuranui this term.

New…

As this blog is giving a lot of information, Brodie and  I have reconsidered our wikispaces to showcase our students work. Room 14 has a new blog and room 13’s will be ready for next term.

Room 14 is now www.fabulous14.wordpress.com

Week 8 – The term is almost gone.

LAST WEEK

We started our daily fitness programme with a ‘beep test’ showing some great results and we now have a daily circuit to keep the students moving.  This will go a long way in helping with next term’s cross country.  We will perform the ‘beep test’ again in June and November.

The term inquiry has the students directing their own learning and they are well into this process with some students tidying up their presentation skills.  This term the students are looking at ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ and have developed a big question to investigate.

NEXT WEEK

The first group of year sevens will head to the Waiohine Gorge on Tuesday for the adventure learning day, this should be an exciting and fun filled day.  We have a mufti-day on Thursday to support Child Cancer.  Touch rugby training will begin on Thursday also, and in class students will be continuing to prepare, present and publish their writing and inquiries with web 2.0 tools.

Week 7 – Where is the term going?…

LAST WEEK

Student Led Conferences were again a great success. I am always amazed at how the students learn to analyse their own data and identify their learning gaps. We call this “goal setting” so the students have a focus through to June’s meetings. We teachers are still needed to ask the questions that will lead them to the right conclusion, but the fact that they themselves understand it, is a huge leap away from “parent – teacher” meetings where the students had little input and not always a great understanding of their own needs. Brodie made a slideshow of his class and the process.

The water testing team headed off to Papawai to conduct the first of four tests to determine the quality of the water. This is being done by schools at various points throughout the Wairarapa. The team will have a report on their class wikis by Wednesday of this week. It will be on the “Papawai Water Testing” page on the sidebar. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Nicole Heard and Doug Fairbrother for transporting the students on these days.

Next Week.

Well, hard to believe, but nothing scheduled! We will continue to focus on publishing using web 2.0 tools (ask your kids) and I’m sure by the end of the week you will have some pretty amazing narratives to view. These tools make student engagement a certainty!

Week 6…it’s getting cooler.

Last week

The inter-school swimming sports were thankfully held on the one warm day we’ve had for a while. Our students competed very well and a large number will be competing in Masterton on Monday night. We wish them well.

Miss Teen Wairarapa speakers spoke to the girls about public speaking and having self confidence. It was great to see so many of our past students achieving their goals and sharing their knowledge.

This Week

Student led conferences are on Tuesday and Wednesday. In Kauri syndicate, students will inform their parents what their goals are in Literacy, Numeracy, ICT (information communication technology) and a general goal. Students have looked at their assessments and discussed their needs with their teacher. In June, the students will undergo another round of assessments and will then compare their their progress and design a new set of goals to take them through to the end of the year. Students will refer to their goals from time to time to keep a strong focus on their goals.

Mr Warren Field, a past teacher at our school, now works for Greater Wellington passing on his knowledge about the environment to students in the Wairarapa. Last year, he trained a group of year 7 students to monitor the quality of water at Papawai. The students will be monitoring the water each term and the findings compared with the other schools and discussed. This initiative is expected to continue in future years. The students will write up a report and put it onto their class wikis.

Lastly, could year 7 parents please ensure that the permission and medical paperwork is sent to Brodie this week and that the payments are made by March 18. If there are any issues, please talk to Brodie, Kevin or myself.

Don’t forget about our class websites and sports blog.
